Small and Simple
"By small and simple things are great things brought to pass," (Alma 37:6). This well-known scripture could be quoted by a majority of Latter-day Saint members. This phrase also came to mind while listening to the lecture by Linda Simmons.
Linda was your typical wife and mother, with a love for the gospel and for coupons. She discovered a group of widows and single women who knitted and put together hygiene kits for a homeless shelter in Salt Lake City, Utah. Linda quickly joined in the cause, using her coupons to gather supplies for their kits. Her life would never be the same. The group--now called Hearts Knit Together--started small, assembling the kits on Linda's bed. They put together 200 in their first year.
The Hearts Knit Together program grew. As more people discovered their project, donations started streaming in. More volunteers started showing up to help. Thanks to kindhearted people in the community, the group finally could move out of Linda's home and into a building. They now have two separate locations, where they assemble kits each week. They have created over 10,200 kits in their seven years of existence. Each kit has a certain theme and is put together with love and detail. They donate to each of the sixteen battered women's shelters across Utah and other homeless shelters. Additionally, they assemble kits to give to the Holding Out Help program, which assists escapees from polygamist communities. The 1,100 refugees who come to Utah from around the world each year also receive help and love from Hearts Knit Together.
I find her story incredibly remarkable. What started as a few scarves and hygiene kits has multiplied into a large project, blessing countless numbers of lives. Truly, small and simple things have turned into something great. I admire her efforts and want to impact the world too. The shampoo and conditioner I donated to her cause does not seem like much, nor does the can of soup I gave to the food drive this morning. But I truly believe that these small and simple things can and will make a difference in someone's life.
Linda told us that they constantly pray for donations and assistance, and Heavenly Father always provides. We can pray for opportunities to serve. He will provide. He can make so much more out of our shampoo and can of soup than we can. He will lead us to those in need. He can guide our hands to help others. Even when we feel small and simple, He will make us great.
