Father Figures
As we just celebrated Fathers Day, I wanted to give a special shout-out to some of the wonderful dads and father figures in my life.
My dad - June is a special time because we get to celebrate my dad twice: for Fathers Day and his birthday. We really should celebrate him every day because as far as dads go, he’s the best. He is patient, selfless, and gentle. He’s always smiling and ready to serve others, especially his kids. My dad taught me how to do math problems and how to ride a bike. He pulled teeth, coached my failed softball career, and watched countless show choir competitions. When I would come home from a late-night practice or from a friend’s house, I would often find our manual garage door already opened, awaiting my arrival. In those small moments, I knew my dad loved me.
My father-in-law - One cool part about getting married is your family grows, and two years ago I gained an amazing new dad. My father-in-law is one of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. He loves to talk, and it’s fun to hear to his stories. He also loves to listen, and has lots of insights and wisdom to share. He’s adventurous and hard working, and loves his family, fossils, and traveling. He took my husband and I on a week-long cruise earlier this year, and we had a blast. My father-in-law helps me to get out of my comfort zone to dance a little more and try crazy foods.
My brother - It has been really fun to see my brother become a dad. He’s been good with kids for as long as I can remember, but there is something so special about seeing him love and protect his baby girl. He can make her laugh like nobody else can. My brother has been loving and protecting me my whole life. I’ll never forget how touched I felt when I got a late-night phone call from my brother making sure I didn’t have to walk home in the dark on one of my first nights at college.
My brother-in-law - My brother-in-law may jokingly complain about his kids, but boy, does he love them! He works so hard to provide for them. He takes them on fun family trips and builds the best block towers and wooden train tracks. I gave my sister and brother-in-law Candyland for their first Christmas together (they'd been married only a couple days) because I was so excited to be an aunt. In a few short months, I'll be an aunt again, and I'm so excited for that sweet baby to get to meet his dad.
Father figures - I've lived away from home since high school, so I don't get to see my parents as often as I would like. But I have been blessed with amazing father figures to look out for me and inspire me to be better. My mission president, my boss at BYU Marriott, my PR professors, my boss at Continuing Education, my Church bishops -- just to name a few. These men have welcomed me into their lives and showed me great kindness by inviting me over for dinner, helping my husband find an internship, and providing never-ending advice.
